Lately, I’ve been noticing how differently pushing vs. pulling feels in my life. So much of the self-development world talks about manifesting, creating, willing it to happen, hustle..i.e., pushing. But lately, I’ve been focusing on pulling, on allowing, on flow, less striving more being. Instead of trying to direct the river of life, I’m surrendering to it, and letting it carry me…pull me along its course. I’m tired of pushing things forward, always working for the next thing that needs to be done…it feels Sisyphean most days.
Lately, I’m down with being pulled….not dragged, but gently pulled. Getting quiet, looking at my life and feeling what PULLS me forward. What I must say, “yes” to. What calls for my attention…now…this moment…today. It sometimes means, a current project gets put on hold, as a new joy calls my name. I am grateful to have space in my life to try pulling vs. pushing and see how it feels. Life seems to feel easier. It feels as if I am hearing the smaller, quiet voice of my soul (vs. the voice of the world), and taking action from that space, which seems to be opening more possibilities. More small moments of joy and delight. In pushing, my head is down and I am working hard. In pulling, my eyes are wide open, looking up in wonder and astonishment.
Mary Oliver writes of living your life in astonishment. Pulling feels bigger than me. Pulling feels guided and grounded. Perhaps pushing and pulling are two sides of the same coin. Perhaps they are simply words that can be used interchangeably. But for me, as I work to tune out the cacophony of the world, and it’s endless demands, pulling feels kinder, more gentle. More in tune with my nature and God.
So you’ll find me over here, happily whistling a tune and being pulled towards my desires, rather than pushing the world to move in my favor. I’m resting in my favor and desires. Here’s to being pulled by what you love.
