Self Reflection Sunday

Getting comfortable with yourself, coming to know yourself better is a process. A process that requires self-reflection. Self-reflection requires slowing down and pausing long enough to listen to the quiet voice of your soul. One of the best ways to hear that voice is to ask yourself questions.

I’ve always loved questions. I have an Evernote document filled with my favorite thought provoking questions. I’ve picked one of them to use today. Take a moment, slow down, grab a journal and a cup of tea or coffee. Take a few deep breaths (or even better, ask yourself this question after your morning meditation). With your mind clear (even if only for a moment), ask yourself “What am I pretending not to know?” Write whatever shows up. No judgment, no filtering, just write.

So many times in life, we know things, we sense things and we don’t want to admit it. We don’t want to look at it. Perhaps it’s hard, it makes us feel uncomfortable, or it involves people we love and care about. Regardless of the reason, where in your life are you pretending not to know something?

For me, right now, I am pretending not to know that I’m not always fine on my own. I’m naturally an introvert, I crave my alone time and truth be told I usually love being solo. But as the years pass and my sons leave home, the space of being single seems less like wide open freedom and more like something I chose by default. A choice that no longer matches what I want in my life. But admitting this means I would actually have to do something about it, which feels equally intimidating to introvert me (have you seen the world of dating these days?! Eek). How I work through these two competing desires remains to be seen. But for now, it’s a start to recognize the parts of myself or my life I am not fully facing.

This question can also be great to use when you are in conflict with someone or in a challenging situation. It helps to highlight what you need to face head-on. You can also ask yourself this question multiple times in a row on an issue to get at the deeper truths. Just write what comes up each time.

May you have a beautiful Sunday, filled with peace and blessings.
